Hypnotherapy myths demystified

If you’re toying with the idea of taking hypnotherapy training, it’s useful to know what this subject is all about – and what it isn’t. Here are some of the most common hypnosis myths debunked..

Hypnotherapy has limited applications.

A lot of people wrongly assume that hypnotherapy is only really useful if you want to quit smoking or shed some weight, but, in fact, it has much wider applications than this. It can be used on all types of people to treat a large range of emotional, mental or physical problems, like other forms of psychotherapy.

People under hypnosis can be made to do or say anything.

Contrary to what many people think, you can’t force someone under hypnosis to act in a way that goes against what they believe or want. A hypnotist isn’t able to control someone’s mind, or has special powers to force them to do things outside their moral boundaries.

If the person under hypnosis feels they’re going against what they believe, they can simply break out of the trance.

You could get stuck in a hypnotic state

Many people are scared at the prospect of hypnotherapy as they worry that they might get stuck in a hypnotic state. The good news is, that this doesn’t happen. In fact, we all encounter some form of hypnotic states on a day-to-day basis on our own accord, like when we daydream or get lost in thought, so there’s nothing alien or scary about the process.

Only some people can be hypnotised

There’s a common myth doing the rounds that says that not everyone has the ability to be hypnotised. In actual fact, anyone can be hypnotised, as long as they want to. If you’re willing but have failed to be hypnotised, chances are you’ve not been working with a professional or trained hypnotherapist.

Hypnosis is like being unconscious or asleep

Many people are put off the idea of hypnosis as they think you’d be unconscious or asleep during sessions. This isn’t true – although in some cases you might nod off for a little bit! However, most people under hypnosis feel that their mind is very much alert and awake, while their body is in a very relaxed state.
